Document Replacement
Losing your immigration documents—or discovering they’ve been stolen or damaged—can be a stressful experience. Fortunately, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) offers a formal process for replacing immigration documents issued to temporary and permanent residents. This includes study permits, work permits, visitor records, and temporary resident permits (TRPs).
If you are in Canada and one of your immigration documents has been lost, stolen, or destroyed, it is crucial to apply for a replacement as soon as possible to maintain lawful status and avoid disruptions to your education, employment, or travel plans. The replacement process requires submitting an application to IRCC along with the necessary supporting documents and applicable fees.
To begin, you’ll need to complete the appropriate form—IMM 5009 (Request to Amend Record of Landing, Confirmation of Permanent Residence or Valid Temporary Resident Documents). You must include photocopies of the affected document, if available, or provide a written explanation of the loss. A police report may also be required in cases of theft.
Applicants must maintain valid status in Canada during the replacement process. If your permit is expiring soon, it may be necessary to also apply for an extension of status, which you can learn more about on our Status Extension page.
This service applies to both temporary residents—such as students, workers, and visitors—and permanent residents who have lost their Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) or Record of Landing (IMM 1000). It does not apply to replacing permanent resident cards, which follow a separate procedure.
Timely replacement of your documents ensures you are not denied access to education, work, or travel. Additionally, a valid document is often required when applying for services such as health coverage, driver’s licenses, or Social Insurance Numbers (SIN).
